Lohajung is the beating heart of trekking in the Garhwal Himalayas. Whether you are aiming for the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek, Brahmatal, or the legendary Roopkund, all roads (quite literally) lead to this small, vibrant mountain hub.
However, reaching Lohajung isn't as simple as hopping on a city metro. It requires a bit of mountain logic and a lot of patience. Here is your complete guide on how to reach Lohajung base camp like a pro.
📍 Where exactly is Lohajung?
Lohajung is situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of approximately 7,660 ft. It sits on the border of the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions, making it accessible from two different sides of the state.
đźš— Route 1: Via Rishikesh / Dehradun (The Garhwal Side)
This is the most popular route for trekkers coming from Delhi or the western parts of India.
Step 1: Reach Rishikesh or Dehradun via train (Nanda Devi Express) or flight (Jolly Grant Airport).
Step 2: From Rishikesh, you have two main options:
The Direct Bus: There is a single Uttarakhand Transport (UTC) bus that leaves Rishikesh ISBT at 5:00 AM. It’s cheap (approx. ₹500) but long and can be crowded.
Shared Jeeps: Head to the "Natraj Chowk" or "Rispana Pull" in Rishikesh early in the morning. Shared Boleros go to Karnaprayag. From Karnaprayag, change for Tharali, then Dewal, and finally Lohajung.
The Drive: It’s a 260 km journey that takes 9–10 hours. You’ll pass through the holy confluences of Devprayag and Rudraprayag.
đźš‚ Route 2: Via Kathgodam (The Kumaon Side)
If you are traveling by train from Delhi, the Ranikhet Express to Kathgodam is your best bet. This route is often considered more scenic and slightly shorter in terms of hill driving.
Step 1: Reach Kathgodam Railway Station (usually by 5:00 AM).
Step 2: Look for shared taxis waiting outside the station. These usually leave between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM.
The Route: Kathgodam → Almora → Kausani → Gwaldam → Dewal → Lohajung.
The Drive: Approx. 210 km, taking about 8–9 hours.
🏠The Last Mile: Tharali to Lohajung
Regardless of which route you take, you will likely pass through Tharali or Dewal.
Dewal is the last major market. If you forgot to buy batteries, woolens, or snacks, this is your final chance.
From Dewal, it’s a steep 14 km climb (about 45 minutes) to Lohajung.
